A study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science suggested that CBD dog treats may help relieve noise-induced anxiety in canines(5). Dog shows may include anxiety triggers, including bright lights, loud noises, and large crowds.    

The three components of a mammal’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) include cannabinoid receptors known as cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), small molecules known as endogenous ligands and enzymes.  

Cannabis-derived phytochemicals, including cannabidiol, may interact with a canine’s ECS.

The complex ECS system helps maintain homeostasis in a dog’s organ systems, including the immune and nervous systems(6). Homeostasis is how a body regulates internal conditions to sustain stable health.  

Studies show that CB1 and CB2 receptors participate in various biological processes to help relieve medical conditions, such as anxiety(7). Thus, CBD may potentially help relieve anxiety in canines at dog shows.   

CBD may also interact with a canine’s cannabinoid receptors through the release of serotonin(8). Serotonin is a hormone that regulates functions like attention and behavior.  

How CBD Oil May Help Canines in Dog Shows 

Past studies suggested that the health benefits of CBD for dogs include relieving or reducing symptoms related to anxiety(9), pain(10), aggression(11), and epilepsy(12). 

A 2020 animal study assessed the effects of CBD treats in noise-induced fear response tests(13). The study with dog subjects used a fireworks model as a fear-triggering stimulus.  

The researchers suggested that CBD may be a potential alternative to help relieve canine anxiety(14). 

However, additional research is warranted to determine CBD’s potential efficacy in canines in dog shows. 

A recent study investigated the efficacy of CBD treatments in dogs with osteoarthritis(15). Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that may cause chronic joint pain.

In the said study, one group of canines received 2 milligrams of CBD per kilogram of body weight (2 mg/kg). The researchers reported that the dogs receiving high-CBD oil appeared more comfortable and active(16). 

A 2021 study assessed CBD’s potential to help reduce aggressiveness in shelter dogs(17). The study’s authors noted that CBD may attenuate hostile behavior in canines.  

CBD does not seem to attenuate stress-related behavior in dogs(18). Still, the study’s results may be useful in further research to determine how CBD may help calm dogs with anxiety issues, including separation anxiety.

What Is CBD Oil? 

CBD oil used in products like CBD oil for dogs is produced by extracting cannabidiol from the cannabis plant and utilizing a carrier oil like hempseed oil, MCT oil, and coconut oil. 

Cannabidiol is a cannabis-derived compound found in marijuana and hemp plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive and typically extracted from hemp rather than marijuana.  

Methods for Administering CBD Oil to Dogs

Dogs may find CBD oil’s “grassy” flavor unappealing. Pet owners can use the folllowing methods to add CBD to their canine’s diet:

Blend of CBD and dog treat: A dog treat, such as peanut butter may conceal CBD’s distinctive taste. 

CBD poured onto dog food: Pet CBD oil is poured onto daily meals.

CBD-infused dog treats: CBD dog treats like soft chews eliminate the preparation time. 

CBD applied through the mouth: A dropper is used. Dogs may not perceive CBD’s taste and texture as distasteful.  

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), when giving ingestible CBD like treats and chews to dogs, you can expect to see symptoms between 1 and 3 hours after ingestion. It usually takes up to 12 hours before symptoms manifest.   

It is prudent to consult a veterinarian and initiate a conversation about CBD use before giving CBD to a dog. 

Is CBD Oil More Ideal Than CBD Treats for Dogs?

CBD dog treats may effectively induce anxiety-relieving effects in situations like loud noises(19). Noises at dog shows may increase anxiety in canine contestants.   

CBD treats may be more suited for dogs that dislike the taste of CBD oil. 

Meanwhile, CBD oils and CBD tinctures give pet owners control over dosing(20). The cannabidiol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream and may thus produce faster therapeutic effects. 

Ideal CBD Dosage for Dogs

The AKC recommends aiming for an initial CBD dosage of approximately 0.1 to 0.2 milligrams of cannabidiol (mg of CBD) oil per kilogram of a dog’s weight(21).   

Dog owners can start administering a low dosage of CBD to their canines to determine whether it is well tolerated. They can then gradually increase the CBD dosage to achieve the desired therapeutic effects.

Consider locally-grown hemp from states including California, Colorado, and Kentucky.

Source of hemp: Hemp oils are hemp extracts derived from hemp flowers, leaves, and stalks. Hempseed oil, often used as a carrier oil, is produced from hemp seeds. 

Third-party lab tests: CBD brands may provide test results through a certificate of analysis (COA).  

Type of CBD: Full-spectrum CBD oil contains several cannabis plant extracts, including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, and essential oils. 

Terpenes are naturally occurring aromatic compounds(23). Flavonoids are natural metabolites with purported health benefits(24). 

However, pet owners should avoid giving CBD sourced from full-spectrum hemp to dogs as they contain THC. THC induces a more severe reaction in canines than in humans(25). 

Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains numerous compounds, including terpenes, flavonoids, and essential oils, although it is typically THC-free. Meanwhile, CBD isolates are pure CBD.

Potential Risk Factors and Side Effects of CBD for Dogs
