How CBD May Help With UTI

An infection within the urinary system is called a urinary tract infection. Most infections happen in the bladder and urethra, located in the lower urinary tract(1).

Cystitis or bladder infection is a specific type of infection in the urinary tract. Bacteria enter the bladder, causing inflammation and bladder pain(2).

When a UTI occurs, bladder walls and urethra turns sore and red, causing pelvic, lower abdomen, and lower back pain.

Our body’s immune system reacts to urinary tract infection by directing immune cells to eliminate any pathogens or bacteria in the area.

This reaction results in symptoms like pain and inflammation(3).

CBD (cannabidiol) is suggested to have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties that may relieve urinary tract infection symptoms(4)-(5).

CBD, an active component of the cannabis plant, interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS)(6), which regulates and maintains homeostasis.

Homeostasis refers to living things’ process to maintain stable conditions needed for survival(7).

ECS consists of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors influence pain sensation, while CB2 stimulates anti-inflammatory response(8).

CB1 and CB2 receptors have a low binding affinity with CBD. However, the compound may antagonize them in the presence of THC(9).

THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is psychoactive and causes a euphoric high in cannabis users(10), whereas CBD is non-psychoactive(11).

Researchers theorized that CBD may reduce the potency of THC and regulate pain perception(12).

There is no study specifically about the effects of CBD on UTIs. However, CBD’s potential health benefits and interaction in the ECS may help with UTI symptoms.

Benefits of Using CBD for UTI

Studies have suggested that CBD may have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that may reduce the symptoms of UTI(13)(14).

Pain in the lower back and abdomen are a symptom of a urinary tract infection(15).

A study showed that CBD may have antibacterial properties that may effectively kill bacteria(16).

Bacteria entering the urethra is the leading cause of UTI(17).

In a study in 2017, researchers found that individuals who received a combination of CBD and THC through capsules and oromucosal spray have decreased incontinence episodes(18).

Urinary incontinence or uncontrolled urination may be caused by a urinary tract infection(19).

How Long Does CBD Take to Help With UTI?

The time it takes for CBD to help with UTIs may vary depending on the form, administration, and dosage.

CBD tinctures are held under the tongue before being swallowed and may take effect within 15 to 30 minutes due to the products’ direct entrance to the bloodstream(20).

CBD edibles like gummies and pills may take effect within 30 to 90 minutes(21).

CBD may also be inhaled through vaping. The effects of CBD may be generally felt within 2 to 15 minutes(22).

However, smoking and vaping are associated with severe pulmonary disease and lung irritation(23). Thus, caution is advised when using this method.

Meanwhile, CBD topicals such as creams and ointments are applied to the skin for localized pain relief. They may require 10 to 15 minutes before CBD takes effect(24).

Consult your doctor or a medical professional if you plan to use CBD products for urinary tract infections.

How Long Will CBD Help With UTI?

There are no recent studies on how long the effects of CBD in the system can last to help with urinary tract infections.

CBD may remain in the body depending on the frequency of consumption, dosage, and method of administration(25).

Risks and Side Effects of Using CBD for UTI

Taking CBD may cause fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, and loss of appetite(26).

CBD may also contain a grapefruit warning. Some effects of medications may be hindered by the use of CBD(27).

Medications from pharmaceutical companies with grapefruit warnings include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Pain medications
  • Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs)
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Cholesterol medications

The severity of interactions caused by grapefruit and the medications may differ depending on the amount of grapefruit consumed, drug composition, and one’s health condition(28).

Alternative Treatments for UTI

When a type of bacteria, like E.coli, enters the urethra, the bacteria may cause a UTI(29).

In general, for healthy individuals experiencing UTI, doctors may prescribe a quick remedy of antibiotics that can clear up the bacteria in one to three days(30).

However, there may be other steps that you may do to prevent or help with UTIs(31):

Drink plenty of water: Drinking water dilutes your urine, which flushes bacteria.

Apply heating pad: Applying a warm compress on your abdomen may minimize discomfort and bladder pressure.

Use essential oils: A 2020 study suggested that essential oils from lemongrass and tea tree may have antibacterial properties for UTIs. However, further studies are still needed to determine their effectiveness(32).

Eat or drink cranberries: Cranberries may help with UTIs due to their infection-fighting properties(33). However, research on the effects of cranberries is still inconclusive. Individuals may still need antibiotics to cure a UTI(34).

It is highly encouraged to consult your doctor for the best supplements or medications you may take for your UTI.

Undergo intravenous treatment: In cases when the UTI resists antibiotics or when the infection reaches the kidneys, individuals may need hospitalization.  Medication will be directly administered through your vein (intravenously)(35).

UTIs should be treated immediately. A prolonged infection in the bladder may lead to a kidney infection(36).

Legality of CBD

Hemp-derived CBD products containing 0.3% THC or less are considered federally legal in the United States(37).

Epidiolex, an antiseizure drug, is currently the only FDA-approved cannabis-derived drug(38).

Some states legalized the use of medical cannabis products. Check and verify your state laws before purchasing CBD oil products.

Product Frequently
Asked Questions

  • How can CBD help with UTIs?

CBD is known to have anti-pain, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties(39).

CBD interacts with the CB2 cannabinoid receptors in the ECS to help manage inflammation. CB2 receptors play a role in limiting inflammation(40).

UTI may cause pain in the lower abdomen and lower back. The immune system’s response to the infection may also cause inflammation(41).

Thus, CBD may be promising in alleviating UTI symptoms like pain and inflammation.

  • What evidence or research exists to say that CBD helps with UTIs?

Some researchers have theorized that CBD may help manage symptoms related to UTIs.

When bacteria enter the bladder or urethra, it may cause a urinary tract infection(42).

Studies have discussed that CBD may contain antibacterial properties that may effectively fight bacteria(43).

Uncontrolled urination or incontinence may be caused by UTI(44).

A 2017 study has noted that people who received capsules and sprays containing CBD and THC experienced decreased episodes of incontinence(45).

  • Is there any evidence that CBD can make UTIs worse?

No current evidence suggests that CBD can make UTIs worse.

CBD, in general, is safe and well tolerated by the body(46). Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that CBD does not cause addiction(47).

However, CBD may cause side effects, like drowsiness, lightheadedness, nausea, dry mouth, and diarrhea(48).

CBD products should be taken after the advice of a doctor.

  • Will CBD interact with any current medication I may be taking for UTI?

CBD is generally safe for human consumption(49).

However, taking CBD with other medications may increase the risk of side effects(50). Opioids may cause increased sleepiness, fatigue, possible accidental falls, and hazards while driving.

Before taking CBD products alongside any medication, it is essential to consult your doctor first.

  • Are there other treatments I should consider alongside CBD to help with UTIs?

For mild cases of UTIs, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics that may clear up the infection in one to three days(51).

You may also do these steps to ease your discomfort until the antibiotics treat the infection(52):

    1. Drink plenty of water.
    2. Use a heating pad on the abdomen
    3. Apply essential oils
    4. Eat or drink cranberries
    5. Undergo intravenous treatment

UTIs should be treated immediately. Otherwise, prolonged bladder infections may lead to a more serious issue like a kidney infection(53).

  • Can I fail a drug test if I use CBD for UTI?

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that does not cause a euphoric high(54)(55).

However, CBD products may contain trace amounts of THC, which can build up in the system if taken over a prolonged period.

An increased THC level in the blood may produce a positive drug test.

  • What is the CBD dosage for UTIs?

There is no specific CBD dosage for urinary tract infections.

Your dosage may depend on factors such as stress levels, diet, exercise, health conditions, and genetics(56).

However, it is suggested that taking lower dosages of CBD initially is best, especially for individuals taking CBD for the first time(57).
